  6. The following information reflects changes made since the 
  7. WinFax PRO User's Guide was printed. We recommend you 
  8. review this document before you install and use WinFax.
  9.

  11. INSTALLATION NOTES
  12. ==============================================================
  13.  
  14. This section describes known issues that you may encounter 
  15. when installing WinFax.
  16.  
  17. Installing WinFax with NAV 5.0 Auto-Protect enabled
  18. ======================================================
  19. The "scan all files" option enabled in NAV 5.0's Auto-Protect 
  20. feature may hinder the complete installation of 
  21. WinFax. To ensure a complete install, simply change 
  22. the option to scan "Program files" only.
  23.  
  24. Scripted Install and DCOM/COMCTL32
  25. ======================================================
  26. Before running a scripted installation (automated
  27. multiple install) of WinFax, you must install or update
  28. DCOM (Windows 95) and COMCTL32. The related executable
  29. files (DCOM95.EXE and 40COMUPD.EXE) are located in the
  30. ADMIN directory on your WinFax installation CD.
  31.  
  32. Installing the RightFax communications device
  33. =============================================
  34. If you want to be able to use the RightFax Client server
  35. feature in WinFax, you must install WinFax using the
  36. Custom Install option. During installation, select Custom
  37. Install, and ensure that RightFax is selected as an available
  38. Communications Device.
  39.

  41. ================================================================
  42. WinFax Fax Sharing
  43. ================================================================
  44. To use the Fax Sharing feature, we recommend that you have
  45. the most recent version of DCOM98 installed on your computer.
  46. This will ensure that all Fax Sharing features function
  47. smoothly. To download the latest version of DCOM98, visit the
  48. Microsoft Web site at:
  49. http://www.microsoft.com/Com/resources/downloads.asp
  50. This is required ONLY if you want to run WinFax in
  51. Fax Sharing mode.
  52.  
  53. When the Fax Sharing option is enabled, you must have
  54. the same date, time, and location settings on both the host and
  55. the client computers. Additionally, the dial as entered location
  56. should not be used when configuring the Fax Sharing
  57. host, as this may incorrectly assemble phone numbers sent from
  58. the Fax Sharing client.
  59.  
  60. When running in Fax Sharing mode, you must be running the
  61. same language versions of your operating system on both the host
  62. and the client computers.
  63.  
  64. When running in Fax Sharing mode, a mixture of double-byte
  65. character (DBCS) and single-byte character (SBCS) systems
  66. may not be used. Both the host and client machines must be
  67. using the same type of character system.
  68.  
  69. When setting up the WinFax Fax Sharing host machine, you must
  70. close and then restart WinFax in order for all settings to
  71. be activated.
  72.  
  73. Be aware that a Fax Sharing Host may take a relatively long
  74. time to close if attached Clients are shut down without first
  75. exiting the Controller.

  79. Dial-Up NetWorking in Windows 95
  80. =================================================================
  81.  
  82. If you use the Fax Sharing feature and you also connect
  83. to the Internet using your modem (via a dial-up connection), you 
  84. are prompted to connect to the Internet each time you start 
  85. WinFax.
  86.  
  87. Quick Fix: When prompted, click Cancel, as you do not need 
  88. to connect to the Internet to use WinFax. 
  89.  
  90. There are two ways to handle this situation on an ongoing basis:
  91.  
  92. A You can click Cancel each time this dialog appears (as
  93.   mentioned above). This option is best suited to those who 
  94.   connect to the Internet more frequently than they use
  95.   WinFax, or for those who cannot change their Internet
  96.   connection method because of corporate standards. 
  97.  
  98. B You can change your Internet connection method to the 
  99.   network option so that this dialog does not appear when you 
  100.   start WinFax. When you next want to connect to the Internet, 
  101.   you must then change your connection method back to the modem 
  102.   option. 
  103.  
  104.   If you want to use Option B, do the following:
  105.  
  106.   1  Click the Windows Start button, point to Settings, and then 
  107.      click Control Panel. 
  108.   2  Double click "Internet".
  109.   3  Click the Connection tab. 
  110.   4  Do one of the following:
  111.      - If you have Internet Explorer 4.0 installed: Enable Connect 
  112.        To The Internet Using A Local Area Network.
  113.      - If you do not have Internet Explorer 4.0 installed: Disable
  114.        Connect To The Internet As Needed.
  115.   5  Click Apply.
  116.

  118. ==============================================================
  119. DIALING AND AREA CODE ISSUES
  120. ==============================================================
  121.  
  122. When setting up a WinFax dialing and location Area Code Rule,
  123. note that if you enable the All Calls Are Local checkbox, all
  124. calls made to the specified area code will be dialed as local
  125. calls, regardless of their exchange.
  126.

  128. ==============================================================
  129. EMAIL ISSUES
  130. ==============================================================
  131.  
  132. When setting up email accounts that you plan to use with
  133. WinFax, do not use password containing HI-ASCII or DBCS
  134. characters. User names containing HI-ASCII or DBCS
  135. characters are permissable.
  136.  
  137. If you are using SMTP/POP3 Internet mail, you should connect to
  138. the Internet before using the Send Fax By Email feature, in
  139. order to avoid possible login error messages.
  140.  
  141. If your Send Fax By Email recipients are running virus detection
  142. software, the self-viewing executable file format in which
  143. faxes sent by email are packaged may cause a false virus alert.
  144.  
  145.  
  146. ==============================================================
  147. MODEM ISSUES
  148. ==============================================================
  149.  
  150. 3Com US Robotics modems
  151. =======================
  152. If you install your USR modem in Windows as a "Standard modem",
  153. Windows will send the wrong TAPI commands to the modem,
  154. causing errors. To avoid this, install your USR modem using
  155. the USR-supplied INF file.
  156.  
  157. If you use the following USR modem:
  158. USR 56K WIN INT soft modem, #5690, VXD 10/29/99, VXD rev.1.00.028,
  159. call discrimination may not function. Contact your modem provider
  160. for the latest driver updates, as support for this feature may be
  161. provided in a future version of the modem.
  162.  
  163. If you are running a USR Professional Message modem, a memory modem
  164. capable of receiving and storing fax messages while WinFax is not
  165. running, you may encounter the following problem. Normally, WinFax
  166. simply downloads messages stored in the USR Professional
  167. Message modem when it is started. However, if the modem's memory
  168. is filled to capacity, some message file corruption can occur.
  169. We therefore recommend that you run WinFax on a regular basis
  170. to avoid this problem. In extreme cases, the Controller will
  171. experience a General Protection Fault, and you will need to manually
  172. clear the data stored in the modem (all messages will be lost).
  173. To do this:
  174. 1) Run the Windows HyperTerminal utility provided with your
  175.    operating system.
  176. 2) On the dialog that appears, leave the Connection Description
  177.    field blank.
  178. 3) Click File/Properties, and in the Connect Using field, ensure
  179.    that the USR Professional Message modem is selected.
  180. 4) Type AT+MEM, and press Enter.
  181. 5) Close HyperTerminal.

  184. ==============================================================
  185. ISDN ISSUES
  186. ==============================================================
  187.  
  188. At the time of this software release, not all ISDN card
  189. manufacturers had Windows 2000 drivers available for testing.
  190. Not all ISDN cards may work with WinFax if you are running
  191. Windows 2000. Contact your ISDN card manufacturer for more
  192. information, and for the latest updates and drivers.
  193.

  195. ==============================================================
  196. MICROSOFT EXCHANGE/OUTLOOK ISSUES
  197. ==============================================================
  198.  
  199. In Outlook and Outlook Express, any names entered must not
  200. exceed 70 characters (35 DBCS characters), or the WinFax
  201. phonebook scrolling and searching capabilities may be impacted.
  202.  
  203. If you upgraded to this version of WinFax from the WinFax
  204. Starter Edition, when you receive a new email message
  205. you may not be able to click on any options on that
  206. email, and you may get an "out of memory" error. If this
  207. happens, close the message and, on the Outlook Tools menu,
  208. click Accounts. Then set another email account as the Default.

  212. LOTUS NOTES ISSUES
  213. ==============================================================
  214.  
  215. If you are running Lotus Notes and WinFax, WinFax may not
  216. be able to automatically update your Path variable to include
  217. your Lotus Notes location. If this occurs, you will be prompted
  218. to edit your autoexec.bat file to contain the path location
  219. in which you have installed Lotus Notes.
  220.     For example: "path=%path%;c:notes"
  221.     where "c:" is the installation location
  222. Note that this issue applies to Windows 95/98 users only.
  223. For related issues applying to Windows NT/2000 users, please
  224. see the section entitled Windows NT/2000 Issues.
  225.  
  226. If running Lotus Notes with WinFax, your WinFax
  227. email login may fail if you use a login name containing
  228. double-byte (DBCS) characters.
  229.  
  230. If running Lotus Notes with WinFax, your WinFax email
  231. functionality may fail if Lotus Notes is installed in a
  232. directory containing double-byte (DBCS) characters, or if your
  233. Lotus Notes ID contains double-byte characters.
  234.  
  235.  
  236. ==============================================================
  237. AOL ISSUES
  238. ==============================================================
  239.  
  240. If you install WinFax and you use AOL 3.0 or AOL 4.0
  241. Preview Edition in Windows 95, you will experience problems 
  242. using the AOL internal browser. 
  243.  
  244. To resolve this issue, upgrade to AOL 4.0 or use another browser 
  245. (for example Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer) to access 
  246. the Internet.
  247.  
  248. The Send Fax By Email feature is not available to AOL users.
  249.  
  250.  
  251. ==============================================================
  252. WINDOWS NT/2000 ISSUES
  253. ==============================================================
  254.  
  255. WinFax NT/2000 Server
  256. =====================
  257. Please note that WinFax is supported on Windows NT/2000
  258. workstation installations only. It is not supported on
  259. Windows NT/2000 Server.
  260.  
  261.  
  262. WinFax NT/2000 Service answers all calls
  263. ========================================
  264. By default, the WinFax NT/2000 Service is set to Automatic
  265. and loads when NT/2000 starts. This allows WinFax to
  266. accept faxes before you log into NT/2000. (The WinFax
  267. NT/2000 Service intercepts all calls.) To avoid possible
  268. conflicts with Remote Access Service and other services
  269. that rely on the modem, set the WinFax NT/2000 Service
  270. to Manual or configure Call Discrimination.
  271.  
  272.  
  273. Call Discrimination and Distinctive Ring
  274. ========================================
  275. At the time of release, Windows 2000 did not support the
  276. Call Discrimination and Distinctive Ring telephony services
  277. in WinFax. Check the Microsoft Web site for recent updates
  278. or service packs which may provide support for these
  279. features.
  280.  
  281. Notification and Fax Forwarding Rules
  282. =====================================
  283. Notification and Fax Forwarding rules will only be applied
  284. to new calls after you log into Windows NT/2000.  
  285.  
  286.  
  287. Lotus Notes and Windows NT/2000
  288. ========================================
  289. If you are running Lotus Notes and WinFax together
  290. under Windows NT/2000, WinFax may not be able to
  291. automatically update your Path variable to include
  292. your Lotus Notes location. If this occurs, you will be prompted
  293. to manually edit your environment path variable to
  294. contain the path location in which you have
  295. installed Lotus Notes. To do this, open your Windows
  296. Control Panel, double-click System, and click the
  297. Environment tab. Add your Lotus Notes location to
  298. the existing Path variable.

  301. ==============================================================
  302. WINFAX/MOBILE ESSENTIALS ISSUES
  303. ==============================================================
  304.  
  305. If you are running Mobile Essentials and have it set to manage
  306. WinFax settings (in Other Programs), you must set up WinFax to
  307. use Windows dialing, as TAPI is required to support switching
  308. dialing information at location change.
  309.  
  310.  
  311. ==============================================================
  312. CONCORD SERVICES ISSUES
  313. ==============================================================
  314.  
  315. If you are running Windows 95/98, the Concord Services
  316. Fax Broadcast feature may not work on some modems. Please contact
  317. Concord Services for more information.
  318.
